National Ilan University (NIU) stands as the only university in Taiwan with a registered archaeological site within its campus. 400 to 600 years ago a thriving Kavalan community existed on what is now university land. Embracing the concept of a ‘borderless museum,’ NIU has resourcefully transformed its campus into an open-air cultural sanctuary, using art and exhibits to seamlessly connect the ancient Kavalan civilization with the university’s now century-long history. This initiative provides a unique and immersive experience for students, faculty, and the public. We cordially invite you to step into this land rich with stories. Experience the wisdom of the ancestors, and the heritage of NIU. Enjoy a century-spanning dialogue from ancient settlement to modern campus.
Highlights of Exploration
Located in the basement of the Administration Building, this permanent exhibition allows you to experience a simulated archaeological excavation site. Through text, images, illustrations, and exquisite replicas, the underground space painstakingly unveils layers of history, bringing to life the activities and culture of the Kavalan ancestors. The Archaeological Wall Timeline provides a three-dimensional cross-section of the site’s strata, showing the crucial Old Settlement cultural layer. Audio guides offer deeper insights into precious unearthed artifacts such as gold foils, geometrically patterned pottery, burials, and the stories these have to tell us.
This arterial pathway connecting Nüzhong Road and Nongquan Road within the campus is a historical, cultural, and artistic promenade. Its design integrates diverse elements of Kavalan life, including hunting, housing, daily activities, craftsmanship, fishing, native plants, wild and domestic animals. Campus sculptures employ a point, line, and surface approach to depict prehistoric Kavalan life. The corridor features interactive scenes and explanatory plaques, offering an accessible understanding of Kavalan culture as you stroll through the campus, with distinct charms day and night. Here, seven ancient burials have been discovered. Together they testify to the footsteps taken here by early inhabitants of the Lanyang Plain.
Situated on the second floor of the Library and Information Center, the NIU Memory Repository adopts a ‘flipped library’ approach to integrate the functions of a library, museum, and archive. It not only documents NIU’s century of landscape changes, academic activity, and significant events but also incorporates archaeological findings from the Ilan Agricultural School Site. Through light sculpture projections, three-dimensional models, a hundred university historical items, and AR recreation of old campus scenes. Visitors are treated to a multi-sensory interactive experience. Here you are invited to engage in a hundred-year dialogue between an ancient settlement and a modern campus. The inaugural special exhibition, the Penghu Waterway Fossil Exhibition, features paleontological discoveries donated by President Wu Bo-ching. These offer a new, multifaceted expansion of the repository’s window on Yilan’s ancient life.
3D Digital Online Exhibition Hall NIU, in collaboration with the Bureau of Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture and the Yilan County Government Cultural Affairs Bureau, has created the Ilan Agricultural School Archaeological Site Artifacts Digital Exhibition Hall in the cloud. A groundbreaking resource, the digital exhibition uses technology to transport the public through time. Here visitors can get an online experience of Kavalan life 400 years ago. Enjoy exploring three reconstructed Kavalan historical scenes. Participate in three interactive Kavalan totem games—including design of your own pottery! Investigate 11 precious artifacts via high-quality 3D scanned models—including geometrically patterned pottery and carved pipes shaped like anthropomorphic fish. This innovative exhibit allows archived artifacts to be experienced by the public via web resources that enable widespread access and use.
